Chennai, India, October 27, 2021:

Yash Raj Films (YRF), one of India’s largest production and distribution houses with numerous blockbuster
hits to their credit, wanted to restore and convert the bonus material related to the making of their hits from
last few decades. These movies included hits like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Chak De India, Veer-Zaara
and Mohabbatein, among others.

YRF had a large volume of behind-the-scenes footage of their films, which presented a wonderful
opportunity to showcase it to their fans. However, this could not be done as the content was in standard
definition, and it had to be restored and upgraded to HD ready.

YRF connected with Real Image to consult on the project, as the team had supported them in the past with
variety of products and services. Mr. Dilip Patil, (Senior General Manager - Digital) of Yash Raj Films, said
that the choice of project partner was very organic for them as, “Real Image has been a trusted partner of
Yash Raj Films for various technology and service needs for a long time. When we decided to upscale BTS
footage of films and songs of our blockbuster movies, we did not have to think beyond Real Image. We are
satisfied with the final result, as the content has been restored and upscaled to industry standards, thus
meeting all our expectations.”

The Challenges
The restoration project posed multiple challenges, the first being that the content existed only in standard
definition. Additionally, it had been transferred from the tape format, which meant that the team had a
second-generation, compressed output to work with.
The content had been shot on a variety of cameras to capture the on-set activity for the making of the film
montage. The footage from different cameras having varying aspect ratios had been mixed and edited
together. The equipment used ranged from camcorders to non-professional cameras and that meant that
the footage had to be segregated as per quality and format, to be processed separately. This posed a
challenge while framing and collating the content and the team had to utilize their creativity to accomplish
it. Finally, numerous artefacts that were present on the footage like physical damage in the form of scratches
and haze had to be painstakingly identified and removed.

“As primary reseller for Digital vision in the subcontinent, Real Image has the right tools and a large team capable of carrying out restoration and upscale of legacy content. We are happy to successfully deliver the project and help Yash Raj Films to archive their legacy content”, says Mr. Kanishka Tongya, Business Head - Media Solutions, Real Image Media Technologies Pvt Ltd.

The Solution
The equipment used for the project was from the Digital Vision stable of products who are industry leaders
in restoration. Digital Vision is one of the foremost developers and suppliers of color grading, restoration
and film scanning solutions for the broadcast, film, commercial and archive industries. The industry favourite
DVO tools are known for presenting the best image manipulation tools for restoration, enhancement, and
format conversions.

The first step of the project was to subject the content to numerous quality check cycles and categorize the
clips as per quality and aspect ratio. The footage was then taken into Digital Vision’s PHOENIX FINISH
software for processing. Each segment of the content was individually processed by multiple passes
through the DVO tools to achieve a non-destructive workflow of the content.
To match the color variations in the footage, primary and secondary color correction was also carried out
during the additional passes. Then to seamlessly match the noise and grain levels for the content, the
award-winning DVO Clarity tool was used. Once the content was restored using its original aspect ratio,
DVO Scala was used to upgrade the content to HD.
