Why Should You Buy An Avid Editing System?

Avid Media ComposerThere are editing systems that promise the best picture quality. There are editing systems that promise the lowest price. There are editing systems that are online. There are editing systems that are offline. There are editing systems that are linear. There are editing systems that are non-linear. There are even some that are in between!

Then there's the Avid Media Composer. The winner of several Product of the Year and Best Non-linear Online Video Editing System awards from Post Magazine, USA. The winner of an Oscar from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The winner of two Emmy Awards. And the choice of thousands of professionals in film, video and broadcast worldwide.

The Non-linear Advantage
Probably the single most important development in the history of film and video post-production has been the advent of digital non-linear editing. Simply put, non-linear editing systems bring you the same flexibility and convenience in editing that the word-processor brought when it replaced the typewriter.

You can jump from one place to another in your source or edited material (No more rewind or fast-forward! No more searching for the right tape!). Make cuts, dissolves, wipes or various other effects (No more painful match frame edits! No more dub copies for your B roll!). Make changes, undo your changes, copy, duplicate, make multiple versions (No more re-doing everything to accommodate one little change!). Multi-layer to your heart's content (No more generation loss!). In short, no more pain (Just the ultimate creative freedom!)

Today, like the poor old manual typewriter, a linear system has little utility left. Sure, you still need tape to store your footage. But why on earth would you waste time editing on tape? If you think compressed video isn't good enough for you, by all means online on an uncompressed digital system. But a non-linear system is still the ultimate creative tool that an editor can get to perfect his work.

And as for those poor souls with one foot in the past offering hybrid systems which mix up linear and non-linear... isn't that a poor excuse for not having a good enough non-linear system.

The Editing Interface
To play chess with the computer, you need to know how to play chess, not necessarily how to use a computer. To work on the Avid, you don't need to be a computer wiz, you just need to be an editor. This is the crucial difference between Avid and the competition.

Any film or video editor ( even one with no exposure to computers ( can learn the basics of editing on the Avid in less than an hour. That's because the Avid was designed by editors from the ground up to be an editor's machine. Over the last six years, input from thousands of professionals worldwide has made the Avid's editing interface absolutely intuitive. If you sit in front of the machine without ever reading the manual, you'll probably end-up doing things right.

What the simplicity of the Avid conceals is one hell of a lot of power. The number of ways that you can trim and slip and slide a cut and move shots around to perfect the edit gives you the ultimate power over your work..

Avid power on demand. Once you've used an Avid, no other system will do...

Organized Editing
A sadly neglected area in just about every other editing system is in the logging and organizational features. With the Avid, you just don't have to maintain notes on paper. The machine can effortlessly keep track of every single bit of information you want. And it can help you use this information to search for the right shot, to organize your work visually and in many other little ways that can make your editing more productive.

The Avid. It's your untiring, dedicated assistant.

Picture Quality
In your dictionary, is compression a bad word? Do you think compression ratios and Kilobytes per frame give you all the truth about the picture? Or is there more to it than meets the eye? The most reliable instrument that is available today to judge compressed picture quality is your expert eye. A Waveform Monitor and a Vectorscope can't really help you compare one compressed picture with another.

Avid has an external A/D-D/A box with high quality signal processing and offers multiple real-time uncompressed video streams.

Multi-layering
After layering three or four shots, if changing the first layer means starting the edit all over again from scratch, then all our competitors can do multi-layering on their systems.

If on the other hand, even after layering as many as twenty four tracks, you still want the flexibility of being able to change any layer without affecting the rest, then you need the Avid. The system that gives you the power to build your layers with no generation loss.

What's more, however many layers you have, you just need to render the top-most layer. Now, that's what we call multi-layering.

Real-time Effects
If you never change your mind, you don't need real-time effects. It's when you want to experiment... with a dissolve, with a trim under an effect, with an alternate take, with a softer wipe... that's when you hate waiting for the machine to render an effect each time, however fast it might be.

Precisely why you need real-time effects.

Not just a few programmed effects that limit your creativity. Effects without bounds. Further enhanced by the seamlessly integrated 3-D DVE with perspective, warps, lighting, trails and much more. Available on every one of the infinite video tracks. Effects that can be key-framed to perfection...effects that are controlled by a unique new direct manipulation user interface that's both powerful and easy to use.

Effects in real-time. Because an edit is enhanced by experimentation.

The Versatile Editing Machine
Into the 25 frames per second world of video came the breakthrough, the award winning technology from Avid that allows true 24 fps picture playback and editing with sample accurate sync to sound. And Electronic Filmmaking took one big step forward. This is the way Hollywood edits today.

Editing for film on the Avid makes even the work-print optional. Telecine from negative and give Avid the edge code information for the start of every camera roll. Once you're through with your edit, Avid will put out a negative cut list, an optical list and why, even a change list.

Avid's innovations never stop. Avid introduced Multicam, a boon for producers of sitcoms, live events, game shows and other multi-camera programmes. Now editing a show shot with many cameras is child's play. It's no wonder then that most sitcoms in America today are being edited on the Avid.

Open Systems
One of today's buzz words is open architecture and everyone wants you to believe that their system is open. Avid believes that a system should be open wherever there is a benefit to customers.

Avid uses standard computer systems. So you see constant performance increases and you can run thousands of other programs on the same computer.

Avid uses standard computer operating systems and file systems so Avid's hard disks can be used by any other software.

Avid provides the most interfaces to other applications and systems. 12 EDL formats, Quicktime and many other graphic/sound file exchanges, Open Media Framework Interchange, Photoshop Plug-ins.

Avid uses industry standard disk drives and other storage devices so price decreases can be quickly passed on to customers.

Avid uses a standard compression technology such as JPEG to take advantage of development work by numerous manufacturers across the industry.

Avid's designs are based on off- the-shelf boards wherever possible which allows it to leverage the board manufacturer's investments in Research and Development.

The benefits of Avid's open architecture. The best software on the best available hardware.
