First Clap seeks to provide a new platform for aspiring filmmakers

Always fancied being a filmmaker? Here’s a big opportunity for you — a three-minute short film can be your shot at fame.

First Clap, said to be India’s first theatrically-showcased talent hunt for aspiring directors, was launched on Wednesday evening, in the presence of heavyweights of cinema — including actor Suriya, directors K.V. Anand and Jayendra and cinematographer P.C. Sreeram.

Promoted by Moviebuff, in association with 2D Entertainment, the contest is targeted at discovering new filmmaking talent in Tamil Nadu, and giving them an opportunity to showcase their movie on the big screen. “Any kind of art needs recognition,” said K.V. Anand, as he went down memory lane. “When I was in class seven, a painting of mine won the third prize, and actor Sivakumar handed me the award. It made me take art seriously, and soon, I discovered photography and filmmaking… it changed my career.”

He’s hoping that First Clap will change the lives of many aspiring filmmakers who have stories to tell, but no platforms to showcase them on. Hari Viswanath, whose Radiopetti is much talked about, urged aspirants to take up such opportunities, which he himself didn’t have when he started out.

“Before Radiopetti , I made two short films because I wanted to test myself. You might have a story, but will you be able to tell it visually? That’s the challenge for every filmmaker,” he stated.

Apart from prizes, the winners of First Clap will also get the opportunity to have their work showcased in theatres. “It’s an opportunity to tell an interesting story within three minutes,” said Suriya, “When presented on the big screen, the filmmaker can also gauge and experience audience reaction first-hand.”

Also present on the occasion were S.U. Arun Kumar, who, after 10 short films, went on to make features such as Pannaiyarum Padminiyum and Sethupathi , and Amar Ramesh, whose Big Short Films seeks to bring out interesting and inspiring stories about people.
