Now Shipping: The Liquid Channel from Focusrite

Focusrite's The Liquid Channel* is a revolutionary professional channel strip that precisely emulates the sound of mic pres and compressors by combining radical new pre-amp technology with dynamic convolution techniques.

The first-ever processor to provide a multitude of classic mic pres and compressor combinations, The Liquid Channel is the world's first truly accurate classic pre-amp replication. It brings vintage processors and rare classics back to life again. Unlike normal channel strips, The Liquid Channel is a "greatest hits" of the audio industry.

The preamp consists of a brand new multi-tapped "Liquid" transformer, combining electronic and transformer-based signal paths with a matrix that selects appropriate values of resistance and capacitance depending on the desired model. In order to recreate every nuance of all mic pres and compressors (including non-linear, vintage characteristics), a unique level-dependent impulse response is applied to each sample using convolution technology. The huge amount of data involved in this process requires lightning fast "SHARC Chip" technology. In addition, The Liquid Channel features a single digital Focusrite EQ based on the parameters of the original ISA 110.

As its adaptability is unparalleled, the applications for The Liquid Channel are many. Artists, engineers, and studios will find it ideal for developing the sound that classic mic pres and compressors provide as well as entirely new audio "flavors." The nature of The Liquid Channel is such that it also serves to dramatically ease logistical issues - stocking multiple hardware devices, involved processing setups, etc. - by providing the means to get at the sounds you want simply by way of just one device.

The Liquid Channel features include:

  • Brand new pre-amp technology, advanced convolution techniques, and the fastest SHARP Chip processing - together, Liquid Technology - combine to form a collection of classic mic pres and compressors
  • A total of 40 classic mic pre and 40 vintage compressor presets form the basis of 100 programmable User Memories for saving session parameters. E-mail your pre amp/comp settings to another session!
  • Brand new Focusrite digital EQ, loosely-based on the ISA 110, with flexible positioning in the signal path
  • Endlessly expandable library of mic pres/compressors via USB download (via an external cross platform application; Windows XP and Mac OS X offers library management and additional storage
  • 192 kHz internal processing, ADC and DAC
  • Versatile front-end, with both digital and analog inputs and outputs
  • Optional "Session Saver" ensures the signal (post-compressor) remains below clipping level throughout
  • "Harmonics" dial provides additional control over warmth and harmonics, thus allowing one to attain the exact sound of any individual unit
  • Stereo link allows use of two units for mix-down/mastering
